Wholesome and risque Eddie Murphy, playing Rudy Ray Moore in ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ makes his comeback as one of the most funny and relatable comedians to ever grace the big screen. "I've got to be totally outrageous,” as Moore states, this film is exactly that.
‘Dolemite Is My Name’ tells the story of Rudy Ray Moore, a man struggling to make it to the top of the world of showbiz. Though the film is not docudrama, it is however, a rather loose and fun-loving retelling of how the original 1975 “Dolemite,” a low budget action comedy, came to be. ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ is not the ordinary cautionary tale of drugs, pimps, power, and guns. Instead, it is a story of friendship and persistence against all odds. It’s glitzy, dirty, bold, and laugh out loud funny.
The most compelling aspects of the film are the characters, the colorful and glamorously ostentatious costumes, and iconically raunchy jokes. Above all, the audience cannot keep their eyes off of the screen simply because of its relatability. Eddie Murphy takes us on a journey of a man in Los Angeles, who is a multipotentialite, always switching things up to get to the next level by keeping his ears to the streets and doing what the people around him react to. From hosting a comedy show in an apartment building and selling records from the trunk of his car to getting signed to a credible record label and selling out famous theaters to adoring fans, Rudy Ray Moore’s journey is inspiring. This movie displays the culture that was built around modern entertainment, through the can do attitude of a man that many can relate to: never had anything handed to him, no father figure, and no money to show for his hard work. Despite all odds, he is a man who goes searching for more for himself, and finds that all of his hard work and determination paid off.
Craig Brewer, director of the film states in a premier interview, “In this industry, there are so many things to keep you down and I think Rudy is this fantastic hero to show...that you can keep fighting.” ‘Dolemite Is My Name’ is a remarkable film for aspiring minds to become their own advocate and believe in their dreams.
